This will reduce your annual expenditure on vitamins and nutritional supplements. Vitamin D deficiency and its symptoms are also keeping many consumers busy. Take all vitamins better They are all reviewed here in terms of their contribution to your health.

A lot of money is spent on all kinds of vitamin pills and dietary supplements to improve health. In this article, we describe the different vitamins and the golden tip to make 8 out of 13 poorly absorbable vitamins better absorbed by the body. Due to artificial light in greenhouse farming and the use of fertilisers and pesticides, the nutritional values in terms of vitamins and minerals in food have deteriorated over the past 20 years. Therefore, it is understandable that consumers seek supplementation.

improve vitamin D absorption and also of the other vitamins

Jyotisha naturopath

Vitamin intake is mainly determined by the 13 different vitamins which can be divided into 3 groups:

4 highly absorbable fat-soluble vitamins

1 easily absorbable water-soluble vitamin

8 poorly absorbable water-soluble vitamin

Minerals and vitamins are substances that the body cannot produce itself. Among other things, they are needed in the regulation of enzymes and hormones. Vitamins come from living nature from plants and animals. Minerals come from dead nature and are absorbed by humans, animals and plants from food or water.

Vitamins, like minerals, are substances found in small amounts in food and drink. They are essential for good health and normal growth and development. They do not provide energy. The body cannot make vitamins itself, with the exception of vitamin D. This own production is not sufficient for everyone, and in all circumstances. There are 13 substances called vitamins.

Quantity of vitamins

Of vitamins, we need a few micrograms to tens of milligrams every day. The need for vitamin C, for example, is high about 75 milligrams. The need for vitamin B12 low about 2 to 3 micrograms. To get enough vitamins, it is especially important to eat a sufficient and varied diet.

In the Netherlands, the Health Council gives recommendations for the amount of each vitamin that healthy people need daily. These dietary standards are given as recommended daily allowances ( ADH) or as adequate intake (AI).

Only for vitamin K, no RDA has yet been set in the Netherlands. A US committee recommends 90 to 120 micrograms per day.

The vitamin requirements of children, men and women differ. The need can also vary considerably from person to person. Some people take in more vitamins from food and drink than others. Each person's metabolism can also work differently. Hereditary predisposition also plays a role. That is why the RDA has a wide margin and separate RDAs apply for men and women and for each age group. Those who keep to the RDAs will certainly get enough. Only a few may need a bit more. But for most people, less than the RDA is also enough.

Vitamin deficiencies

Vitamin deficiencies are almost non-existent in the Netherlands. However, some groups of people do need extra vitamins. Vitamin D deficiency and Vitamin B12 deficiency are the most common vitamin deficiencies. The industry of vitamins and dietary supplements has become big.

Natural vitamin absorption occurs mainly in the small intestine. Vitamins made by the bacteria in the large intestine (colon) are also absorbed in the colon. The intestinal bacteria of the large intestine (colon) produce vitamin K and some B vitamins.

Four highly absorbable fat-soluble vitamins

The four fat-soluble vitamins are vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K. These fat-soluble vitamins are mainly found in the fat of foods and are stored in the body's tissues. The fat-soluble vitamins, as the name suggests, are dissolved in the food fat. The fat in the food pulp is packed into micelles in the small intestine and absorbed by the intestinal cells. These micelles also contain the fat-soluble vitamins. When the micelles are absorbed with the fat, the fat-soluble vitamins are also absorbed.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A (retinol), a fat-soluble vitamin, is involved in resistance. It is therefore also called the anti-infection vitamin. It also plays a role in growth, vision and skin and gum health. Vitamin A is found in animal products and is mainly found in liver. The body also makes its own vitamin A from plant products. Retinol is good for skin, eyes, growth and resistance

Vitamin D

improve vitamin D absorption

Vitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin, is important for strong bones and teeth. It also promotes the absorption of the minerals calcium and phosphorus in the body. In addition, vitamin D plays a role in proper muscle function and the immune system. This vitamin also plays a role in maintaining resistance and proper muscle function. The main source of vitamin D is sunlight. This vitamin is produced in the skin under the influence of sunlight.

Under the influence of sunlight, vitamin D is formed in the skin. The body can make its own vitamin D in the skin under the influence of sunlight. This vitamin is also found in food: mainly in oily fish, and with somewhat lower levels in meat and eggs. Young children, the elderly, people with a tinted skin tone, people who don't go out much and pregnant women are advised to take extra vitamin D.

Absorption of vitamin D

Vitamin D is best absorbed in the gut when fat or oil is also present. The average dietary intake of this vitamin is estimated at 80%. The body can store vitamin D in fatty tissue and organs, such as the liver.

In the liver, vitamin D is converted into 25-hydroxyvitamin D. This form is not active in the body but the level in the blood is suitable to determine whether the amount of vitamin D in the body is sufficient. In the kidneys, 25-hydroxyvitamin D is then converted into 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. This is the active form of vitamin D.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E (tocopherol) plays a role in making red blood cells and maintaining muscle and other tissues. It is also important for resistance. Vitamin E is an antioxidant: it protects cells in the body. Apart from alpha-tocopherol, other tocopherols are known, but alpha-tocopherol is the most important and active form of vitamin E.

Vitamin E:

prevents them from being damaged by oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids.

protects cells, cell membrane, bloodstream and tissue from free radicals.

Also regulates cellular metabolism.

is found in sunflower oil, diet margarine, diet margarine, bread, cereals, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruit.

is important as antioxidant.

Vitamin E deficiency is rare. An excess of vitamin E in the body is not harmful. Only the blood clotting of people with vitamin K deficiency and those treated with blood thinners can be affected.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is important for blood clotting, as well as for bone metabolism. Newborn children are given extra vitamin K after birth. Breastfed babies need 150 micrograms of vitamin K drops for the first 12 weeks to prevent brain haemorrhages. They did not receive a vitamin K supply from the mother and cannot yet produce it sufficiently themselves.

Vitamin K or phyloquinone is needed for proper blood clotting and possibly bone formation.

Adults taking long-term antibiotics may also develop vitamin K deficiencies, possibly resulting in delayed blood clotting.

In practice, too much of this vitamin does not occur, nor, as far as is known, does it produce any harmful effects. However, people taking blood thinners or anticoagulants should be careful with vitamin K pills containing more than 100 micrograms of vitamin K.

Vitamin K or phyloquinone is needed for proper blood clotting. There is also growing evidence that this vitamin plays a role in bone formation.

Vitamin K consists of vitamin K1, which is found in food and drinks. Bacteria can produce the substance menaquinone or vitamin K2 in the colon. This substance has the same effect as vitamin K1. Small amounts of vitamin K2 are also found in liver, cheese and egg yolk.

It is not known whether too much vitamin K is harmful. In practice, too much of this vitamin does not occur.

A highly absorbable water-soluble vitamin

Vitamin B12 is the only vitamin that is water-soluble and also well absorbed by the body. It cannot be absorbed without previous processing. Vitamin B12 must first be bound to intrinsic factor. This intrinsic factor is made by the stomach. Next, intrinsic factor binds to vitamin B12 creating a complex. The vitamin B12-intrinsic factor complex binds to certain receptors in the last part of the small intestine (ileum). In the ileum, the vitamin B12-intrinsic factor complex is absorbed by endocytosis.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is part of the vitamin B complex. This vitamin prevents a certain form of anaemia. It is also important for a good resistance. In addition, it plays a role in the formation of healthy red blood cells. It also ensures proper functioning of the nervous system and contributes to energy supply. Furthermore, it plays a role in the metabolism of folic acid.

Vitamin b12 absorption and storage

Vitamin B12 is bound to a protein in the diet. In the stomach, the stomach acid, among other things, disconnects the protein from vitamin B12. Then, in the small intestine, vitamin B12 binds to another protein: 'Intrinsic Factor'. This protein is made in the stomach, but only couples to vitamin B12 in the intestine. This coupling is necessary for the absorption of vitamin B12 in the body. This happens at the end of the small intestine. Your body probably absorbs about 40 to 50% of the vitamin B12 you take in.

Vitamin B12 is the only water-soluble vitamin that your body stores as a 'reserve supply'. It amounts to about 2 to 5 milligrams, mainly in the liver. Vitamin B12 can also be found in plant products, for example in dried seaweed and algae. But much of this is a variant that is not active and the body does not absorb well.

Vitamin B12 is found almost exclusively in animal products because it is made by certain bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of animals. Humans also make vitamin B12 that way in the colon, but our bodies do not absorb this vitamin B12 there. It is therefore important to get vitamin B12 through food. This is because animals do absorb the vitamin B12 that is made, so it ends up in their meat, eggs and milk.

Eight poorly absorbable water-soluble vitamins

The eight water-soluble vitamins are vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B8, B11 and vitamin C. These vitamins are found in the moisture contained in foods. The body cannot normally store these water-soluble vitamins properly. Excess water-soluble vitamins normally leave the body through your urine.

Vitamins that are water-soluble cannot be stored by the body, if at all. With the exception of vitamin B12. An excess of these vitamins leaves the body through the urine. As a result, it almost never happens that you ingest too much of these vitamins.

Water-soluble vitamins include: all B vitamins and vitamin C.

Water-soluble vitamins are absorbed by the small intestine through diffusion, passive and active transport. In passive and active transport, there are certain transporters in the intestinal cells that take up a particular type of water-soluble vitamin.

Vitamin B1

Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is part of the vitamin B complex. This vitamin helps burn carbohydrates from our food, giving us energy. It also plays a role in the nervous system and in the functioning of the heart.

Vitamin B1 or thiamine is essential for the body's energy supply, the functioning of the heart muscle and the nervous system. Vitamin B1 is commonly found in bread and cereal products, potatoes, vegetables, meat and meat products, milk and milk products. If vitamin B1 is deficient, mental disorders may occur.

Vitamin B1 is also known as thiamine or aneurin. The name for the natural form of vitamin B1 in food and drink is thiamine (Th) or Th diphosphate(TDP). The name for vitamin B1 supplements is thiamine chloride hydrochloride or thiamine mononitrate.

Vitamin B2

Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) is part of the vitamin B complex. This vitamin plays a role in maintaining the nervous system, digestion and energy balance. It is also important for healthy skin and vision. This vitamin B2 contributes to the protection of cells in the body against oxidative damage.

Vitamin B2 or riboflavin is needed for the body's energy supply. It is mainly found in milk and dairy products, but also in meat, cold cuts, vegetables, fruit, bread and cereal products. Riboflavin cannot withstand light and it is therefore advisable to store products containing vitamin B2 in the dark.

Vitamin B2 deficiency can cause skin abnormalities near the mouth, tongue and inflammation near the nose. Vitamin B2, as a coenzyme (cofactor), plays an important role in releasing energy. This is extracted from carbohydrates, proteins and fats that the body gets through food and drink. It is thus an important vitamin for metabolism.

Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3 (niacin, nicotinic acid, nicotinamide) is part of the vitamin B complex. This vitamin plays an important role in cellular energy supply and nervous system function. It is also important for healthy skin.

Niacin (vitamin B3) is important for energy supply. It also plays a role in the production of fatty acids in the body. Niacin can be present as nicotinic acid or nicotinamide. Vitamin B3 is found in meat, fish, whole grain cereals, vegetables and potatoes. Furthermore, the body can make its own niacin from the amino acid tryptophan, which is a component of all dietary proteins.

Niacin dissolves in water. Vegetables are therefore best cooked in little water and pieces should not be cut too small.

Vitamin B5

Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) is part of the vitamin B complex. This vitamime plays an important role in the breakdown of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. It contributes to the supply of energy. It is also important in the formation of a number of hormones and ensures a properly functioning nervous system.

Antothenic acid or vitamin B5 is needed for the body's energy supply, building and breaking down proteins and fats. Pantothenic acid is found in meat, eggs, whole grain products, legumes, milk and milk products, vegetables and fruits.

A prolonged and severe pantothenic acid deficiency can cause a burning or painful sensation in the feet. This vitamin (pyridoxine) is important for resistance and digestion. It also plays a role in the formation of red blood cells. Vitamin B6 also ensures proper functioning of the nervous system. It is important for energy supply

Vitamin B6 is important for metabolism, especially for breaking down and building amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Vitamin B6 regulates the action of certain hormones and is needed for growth, blood production and proper functioning of the immune and nervous systems. This vitamin is found in meat, eggs, fish, bread and cereal products, potatoes, legumes, vegetables, milk, milk products and cheese.

The chemical name of vitamin B6 is pyridoxine, but it can also occur in a slightly different form as pyridoxal or pyridoxamine. Or these forms are linked to a phosphate, such as pyridoxine phosphate, pyridoxal phosphate and pyridoxamine phosphate. In supplements, pyridoxine is usually linked to chloride: pyridoxine hydrochloride. These different forms of vitamin B6 are interchangeable. Ultimately, they work the same in the body.

All forms of Vitamin B6 are absorbed by intestinal cells and converted to pyridoxal. It is transported via the blood to the liver where it is converted into the biologically active form pyridoxal phosphate. In this form, vitamin B6 does its work in the body.

Absorption of vitamin B6

All forms of Vitamin B6 are absorbed by intestinal cells and converted to pyridoxal. Here, there are no major differences between the different forms of vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 absorption from a supplement is estimated at 95%.

Vitamin B8

Vitamin B8 (biotin) is part of the vitamin B complex. This vitamin (biotin) plays an important role in building and breaking down carbohydrates and proteins and producing fatty acids. It contributes to the supply of energy. In addition, vitamin B8 is important for a properly functioning nervous system, for healthy hair and skin.

Biotin is the same as vitamin B8 and is needed to release energy from food and plays a role in the formation of fatty acids. Vitamin B8 keeps skin and hair healthy. Biotin is found in eggs, liver, milk, nuts and peanuts. Too little biotin can cause skin abnormalities, anaemia and depression. Deficiencies of this vitamin are almost non-existent, only if you often eat a lot of raw eggs.

Biotin is needed to release energy from food and plays a role in the formation of fatty acids. Vitamin B8 keeps skin and hair healthy. Biotin is found in eggs, liver, milk, nuts and peanuts. The form naturally present in food and drink is biotin or biocytin. In (multi)vitamin supplements and for addition to foods, biotin is usually used.

recording too much?

An excess of vitamin B8 does no harm, even if you take in 100 micrograms a day. The excess you urinate out.

Vitamin B11

Folic acid (vitamin B11) is part of the vitamin B complex. Folic acid is important for a properly functioning nervous and immune system. Vitamin B11 plays a role in the formation of red blood cells, hereditary material (DNA) and healthy growth during pregnancy. It is also very important in cell division during growth. This vitamin also lowers the risk of giving birth to a child with spina bifida. In addition, folic acid lowers blood homocysteine levels. High homocysteine levels are associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

Folic acid is one of the few vitamins that Dutch people do not always get enough of, especially pregnant women. Vitamin B11 is needed for the growth and proper functioning of the body and for the production of white and red blood cells. Folic acid is also important for the early development of the unborn child. Folic acid is also known as folate or citrovorum factor. The name for the natural forms of folate in food and drink is tetrahydrofolates. The form in which folic acid is present in supplements is pteroylmonoglutamic acid (folic acid).

Folic acid plays an important role in the early development of the unborn child. Vitamin B11 contributes to the formation of the nervous system from the first day after conception. Folic acid reduces the risk of birth defects such as neural tube defect (NBD) or spina bifida, cleft lip and cleft palate.

Folic acid occurs naturally in vegetables, especially the green varieties, whole grain products, bread, meat and dairy. By eating a varied diet, everyone can get enough folic acid, except pregnant women.

Absorption of vitamin b11

The body absorbs folic acid from a pill more easily than from vegetables or potatoes, for example. In addition, absorption into the blood also depends on the action of the stomach, bile and pancreatic juices in the body. The extent to which a nutrient is absorbed is called bioavailability. Bioavailability is lower for natural folic acid in, say, potatoes, 30 to 50% than that of a pill.

This is because folic acid in food differs from that in a pill. In food, folic acid is present in the polyglutamate form. These polyglutamates must first be converted into the monoglutamate in the gut. The body stores folic acid in the liver. On average, an adult stores 12 to 28 milligrams of folic acid. This supply can meet the body's needs for about 6 weeks.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is primarily important for good immunity. It also ensures healthy bones, teeth, skin and blood vessels. It ensures a properly functioning nervous system and contributes to energy supply. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant and, together with vitamin E, protects the body against free radicals. Free radicals play a role in ageing processes. Vitamin C also promotes iron absorption.

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is the best-known vitamin. Ascorbic acid has a function as an antioxidant in the body and is required for:

the formation of connective tissue

iron absorption

maintaining resistance.

Vitamin C is found in fruits, vegetables and potatoes, especially in brassicas, citrus fruits, kiwis, berries and strawberries. To preserve vitamin C as much as possible, it is important to cook vegetables in little water, and not longer than necessary.

Vitamin C has a antioxidant function and thereby protects body cells from oxidative damage. Oxidative damage occurs as a result of exposure to free radicals. This vitamin is needed, among other things, for the formation of connective tissue, iron absorption and the maintenance of resistance.

If deficient, reduced resistance, delayed wound healing and eventually scurvy can occur. Too much vitamin C can cause intestinal discomfort or diarrhoea.

The chemical name for the natural form of vitamin C in food and drink is L-ascorbic acid. On food labels, vitamin C may also be listed as E-300 or E-301 (sodium ascorbate). In this case, it has been added as an additive for preservation (antioxidant).

Vitamin absorption tips

The body absorbs only part of all the vitamins and minerals you get with your daily meals. With the tips below, you can increase that.

By including fruit and also vegetables with the bread meal.

By putting margarine or oil over the vegetables.

Take a vitamin supplement with meals.

Use orange juice with the bread meal.

Do not drink coffee and tea with your meal.

Do not use mineral supplements with your meal.

Don't reheat food too often.

Drink ionised oxygenated water

Increase vitamin absorption with an Alpha water ioniser

Do you use a multivitamin or specific vitamins and minerals to support your health? Then you may be able to get more out of your supplements by taking them with ionised alkaline water. You can get ionised water at the pH level you set with an Alpha water ioniser.

water ioniser for under the kitchen sink. This means your body can absorb the refreshing benefits of water in a faster and easier way. The smaller molecules penetrate the body more easily. Moreover, the water is full of antioxidants. Supplementation and vitamin absorption are much better with ionised alkaline water. For this benefit, use the pH you normally drink, with a pH range of 7.5 to 10.0.

Even though you can take your supplements with alkaline water, avoid high pH water with prescription medication. You may then be able to absorb the medication too quickly. This puts you at risk. Depending on the medication and your body, and could counteract the role of extended-release drugs. Instead of alkaline water, use your medication with purified water with a pH of 7.0.

Feel weird after taking a vitamin or dietary supplement with alkaline water? Then try lowering the alkaline level. It is best to first investigate with a naturopath. The absorption rate of the specific supplement may be important. Book a free online consultation.

Using a water ioniser gives you the flexibility to choose the pH level of your water for each specific use. That way, you can make purified water for taking medicine. Switching to alkaline water for healthy water drinking and also increase the absorption of your vitamins and supplements.

Buy or rent the Alpha Water Ioniser?

Once you are interested in buying a water ioniser, contact us on 023-7852710 or order via our webshop.
