Approved drinking water thus contains a collection and all kinds of low concentrations of all kinds of hazardous substances such as: drugs, chemicals, oils, medicines, petrol and, pesticides. In the case of strawberries, the Food Inspection Department changed its policy in 2020 and created an integral test to map the collection of all chemicals - especially pesticides - in a strawberry. For tap water, unfortunately, such a comprehensive quality test not yet.
Moreover, the vast majority of substances are not tested. It is virtually impossible to test for all drug raw materials, for example. Only 80 out of 500 drug raw materials are currently tested by our water utilities. There are also frequent violations of the individual standards of each substance that does get tested for. This often results in an increase in the level of harmful substances in drinking water in a short period of time. Without a proper water filter, you miss the 100 per cent protection against this.
Our Dutch surface water is of increasingly poor quality. Large-scale centralised treatment is becoming increasingly difficult. The ten Dutch water companies are very concerned for this reason. Even low concentrations can be harmful
Low concentrations of residual pollutants can do no harm according to government agencies and water utilities. When it comes to the effect of hazardous substances at low concentrations, there are two very important things to consider in terms of health and life expectancy:
- Temporary high doses of hazardous substances in drinking water directly affect health. These are sampled and increase in frequency. The samples are very limited in terms of the number of chemical raw materials tested for.
- Long-term exposure to chemical contamination within the norms of only a limited number of substances tested may very well affect life expectancy. For each individual substance, it is within the norm. However, the adverse effects over time of all substances added together can still be detrimental to expected life expectancy.
Animal studies have shown that even low concentrations have major disruptive effects on health. For example, fish seem to show different behaviour in water with very low concentrations of antidepressants. Contraceptive drug residues cause abnormal and genetic abnormalities in fish. In men, the drug residue of oestrogen at light doses in tap water still has a powerful effect on hormone balance. Filtering water at home and or in the office is the only solution to this.
A water filter - what to look out for?
When you decide buy a water filter there are some criteria you should consider. Some water filters have adverse side effects such as removing all minerals. Others do not filter finely enough so plastic and asbestos particles are not stopped. A water filter on your kitchen tap is not powerful enough as is a water filter jug.
- A water filter should be of a very high quality and suitable for removing residual organic chemicals and heavy metals from drinking water. A lot of available products do not get the these substances out of tap water.
- The water filter should prevent harmful BPA plastics from entering drinking water. In terms of housing material, it should be made with BPA-free plastic material.
- We do not recommend a whole-house water filter system. You can then never install the most efficient solution. For drinking water, we recommend a nano or ultra fine filter to retain plastic particles and asbestos particles from the water supply network as well. Our system here provides an additional kitchen tap made of titanium. This is the best solution to keep oxygenated water from oxidising the metal of an ordinary tap. Your body also basically absorbs ultra-fine substances through the skin while showering. However, plastic nano particles also float through the air. In addition, it makes no sense to add oxygen to shower water. Water ionisers cannot currently handle the required water volume for showering either. Therefore, it is better to use a solution that only makes tap water ultrafine and naturally pure.
- Replacing a filter should be very easy. Since filters need to be changed, this should be considered in your choice. In some water filtration systems, changing the filter can be quite complicated. Then a service technician is needed to replace it. This usually implies higher costs. Alpha filters are very easy to replace by yourself.
- A water filter system with water ionisation vitalises and ensures healthy water drinking. If you remove harmful chemicals, the molecular structure of water can still be unhealthy.
