What exactly does having a water ioniser fitted involve? An ioniser system connects the appliance to the existing cold-water pipe and ensures a secure, leak-free connection. The water flows to the appliance via a connector or branch pipe, is ionised, and is then made available for use via a separate tap.
In practice, this means that the existing pipework and taps determine the approach. A designer tap or a non-standard tap connection requires a different solution to a standard situation. Anyone who ignores this beforehand runs the risk of leaks or unstable water pressure. Thorough preparation — including photographs of the current kitchen layout — prevents any surprises during installation.
Water ioniser installation for countertop model
With a tap adapter, the water ioniser is connected to the kitchen tap via the cold water supply. It can also be connected directly to the water mains if a small hole can be drilled in the kitchen worktop or in the side of a kitchen cupboard. There must also be a power socket nearby. The sink must be nearby as the end of the stainless steel hose must extend above the sink. In addition, the waste water is drained via the sink.
Water ioniser installation under countertop model
For this model, a 3.2 cm hole must be drilled in the worktop or in the stainless steel section near the sinks. For granite or marble worktops, we drill the required hole using a diamond drill bit without causing any water damage. For plastic or wooden worktops, we’ll take care of this for you using a different metal drill bit. In the case of a stainless steel worktop, we have a special metal drill bit. We then gradually enlarge the hole until the tap can fit through it.
Of course, the most advanced water ioniser in terms of installation requires a power supply to be installed under the kitchen sink cabinet. This includes the electrical installation in the house, using the available circuits. Ideally, we’ll install a power strip with a switch high up in the kitchen cupboard, so that it’s never exposed to water. In addition, by removing the kitchen skirting board, we should be able to find a power connection from the oven or dishwasher that we can tap into.
To connect to the cold water mains, we would like to receive a few photos of the current connections to the cold water side of the kitchen tap. This always refers to the small metal hose on the right-hand side leading to the tap. These may be of two different sizes, depending on the age of the kitchen. We will then fit an adapter onto this with a connection to the water ioniser unit.
