Improving tap water quality the facts for you
Is tap water quality good or not? A research report from January 2021 from the RIVM let the alarm bells ring. As many as 135 of 216 drinking water sources contain substances that do not belong in water. Pesticides in drinking water are largely responsible for this. Exceedances of pesticide or insecticide standards were found at 1 in 3 drinking water sources, i.e. 70 out of 216 water sources. In June 2021, the RIVM will release once again, alarm bells are ringing for the uptake in our bodies of too many of the 4,000 chemicals known as PFAS. Is tap water healthy?
In July 2021, the RIVM insight on the unsafety of tap water for a baby in large parts of our country. Uptake both through food and tap water. For the short term, Healthy Water Drinking labels tap water unhealthy and advises filtering tap water at home for both pesticides and PFAS.
The biggest problem is that there are no figures of the effects on our bodies of the combination of all the chemicals in our drinking water, and research into drug residues involved only 80 out of 500 medicine raw materials. The standards from the Drinking Water Decree may well be outdated.
Don't wait for politics fuelled by new scientific studies. Take matters into your own hands and make conscious health choices for your entire household. To harmonise both old and new exposure to toxins, we recommend purchasing a water ioniser. Only a alkaline water ioniser can thoroughly detoxify your body afterwards or detox with a modern English word.
Drinking Water Decree and Drinking Water Directive
The drinking water supplied by the water companies complies with the EC Drinking Water Directive 98/83 / EC and the requirements of the Drinking Water Decree applicable in the Netherlands. They monitor the quality of the drinking water supplied through our continuous monitoring and control of our wells, production and distribution facilities and infrastructure. This monitoring meets the requirements set out in the Drinking Water Decree. The Environment & Transport Ombudsman, part of the Directorate of Infrastructure and the Environment, ensures that we comply with the Drinking Water Decree. For the focus area 'drinking water production and supply sector', water companies are mostly certified according to the ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 55,001 (asset management) standards.
The certificate can be verified on the website of our KIWA certification body. PWN and 9 other water companies participate annually in a comparative (benchmark) study among drinking water companies in the Netherlands.
Is Dutch tap water really the best in Europe?
The 10 Dutch water companies have been successful in getting their image right with the general public. A few go about advertising that we, the Dutch, have the best quality tap water in Europe. This is true for 2/3 of the volume which comes from 23 out of 216 drinking water sources. Not so for surface water.
Tap water meets all the individual standards of the 65 quality characteristics. For example, the nitrate and chlorine content of tap water can meet the threshold values for adults. For babies, it is advised not to use tap water for making milk. This is because of the excessively high nitrate content in agricultural areas. These standards have not yet stood the test of time. Do we even know the long-term effects of these 65 threshold levels of our tap water?
Then there are unaware parents who then heat the milk in the microwave. This again is more harmful than tap water. All the nutritional value goes out. And so we live in a world and in the Netherlands where many people are not yet aware of dangers. This while we consist of 80% of water.
Drinking water quality and the 35,000 km of asbestos cement water pipes
The 10 water utilities together need to invest 200 billion euros to rehabilitate the 35,000 km of asbestos cement pipes. What is much smarter in to provide each of the 7.7 million households in the Netherlands with an Alpha water ioniser. Cost 20 billion Euros. A factor of 10 less. Plus the benefit of removing all previous poisons from heavy metals, pesticides and medicine residues from the body. So both the problem of years of exposure to toxins and possible new digests are solved. Taking the step yourself soon is even smarter. Waiting for politics can take years.
Is all this safe for public health? The 140,000 km pipeline network consists of 35,000 km of 60-year-old asbestos cement pipes. These can leak and before these leaks are detected, high concentrations of asbestos particles can enter the water. According to government agencies, drinking this does no harm to public health. International studies point a different light on this with a small increased risk of 3 types of cancer. These studies involve drinking water containing very small amounts of asbestos particles from rainwater collected through an asbestos roof for 15 years. How this works out in the Netherlands and Belgium with temporarily very high concentration of asbestos particles we do not know.
Only a few water utilities are engaged in the very costly clean-up of asbestos cement water pipes. It will take 200 billion euros to replace them. These costs weigh hugely on the balance sheet of the water utilities and for this reason, the process of remediation will take place very slowly and quietly. We hardly read anything about it in the newspapers. Panic must not be allowed to set in.
Tap water quality is poor because it does not contain enough oxygen.
Tap water contains no antioxidants that rid our body of acid residues. Acid residues make our body sick or chronically ill or even incurably ill. Traditionally, not enough oxygen is added to tap water, as this caused steel and copper water pipes to oxidise or rust too much.
Waterworks mixing with 'potentially chemically polluted' surface water
Any pollution is within limits but all pollution together can be harmful to health. You never know when you are drinking healthy tap water. Tap water from 23 water sources hundreds of metres underground is of excellent quality but is mixed with surface water. 2/3 of the total volume is extracted by the water companies from those 23 Dutch water sources. This tap water is of super quality.
Integrated tap water quality measurement lacking
Surface water in the Netherlands is unfortunately polluted with medicine residues, pesticides and plastic particles. 1/3 of the total water volume we consume comes from surface water. These pollutants are each within the legal standards for public health. However, we do not know whether the values of all pollutants together do not endanger public health. We saw this scare recently with strawberries, where the RIVM has now provided the integral picture of all pesticides together. Suddenly, the most beautiful-looking strawberries were harmful to health.
Tap water quality and pesticides
The situation regarding pesticides in tap water is alarming. filter tap water or not? Yes at home purify tap water because 76 of 216 drinking water sources are too polluted with pesticides and as many as 135 of 216 drinking water sources also no doubt contain substances that do not belong in drinking water according to a RIVM study from January 2021.This drinking water source pollution calls for a water filter pesticides at home. Buy a water ioniser with a good water filter then afterwards you will also detoxify your body from pesticides due to years of exposure and poisoning. You are 70% water and drinking healthy water 24/7 will replace your entire body of water and get rid of toxic waste. In addition, you prevent new exposure to toxins!
Tap water quality and drug residues
A recent study conducted for the province of South Holland on medicine residues in tap water shows that despite only testing for 80 out of 500 raw materials, there was still a public health risk in 6 Dutch municipalities. No research was done on all medicine raw materials. And so that integrated picture could be even more worrying.
Tap water quality and microplastics
An international study on plastic particles in tap water is very alarming. In 72% of water samples in some major European countries around us, tap water was contaminated with plastic Nano particles. These enter our environment via clothes dryers and then enter surface water via rain. Doctors are pushing for extensive research because these very small particles can get into our organs and are not degradable. We do not yet know what damage they can do as they pass through cell walls. In 2020, the government announced that it would invest 40 million euros in a research project to make treatment plants filter finer. A water filter microplastic seems indispensable for the coming years.
Tap water quality and environmental pollution
You see more and more reports in the newspaper about chemical discharges by companies in the Rotterdam area containing carcinogenic substances. This endangers the quality of surface water. You also increasingly see illegal dumping of XTC factories on a larger scale, especially in the province of Brabant. This puts the quality of groundwater at risk. For infants, in agricultural areas, the advice of the consultation agencies not to drink tap water because of the excessive dose of nitrate has been in place for decades. For adults, this warning does not apply.
Tap water and heavy metals
Heavy metals have been adequately filtered out of drinking water. Only in cases where lead water pipes are still present in old houses themselves do they pose an acute threat to public health. Lead in tap water by lead water pipes in old houses was in the news in 202o in Amsterdam North.
Tap water deteriorates in quality due to long route through water supply network
Tap water also loses its perfect geometric shape due to the long way it travels. Meltwater in the mountains still has the shape of a snowflake in the water. This gives the feeling of freshness to the water.
You have Unhealthy Water and Healthy Water: 7 varieties of ever-improving tap water quality!
- Contaminated tap water from surface waterLow oxygen and chemically contaminated. Treated with chlorine and possibly contaminated with plastic and/or asbestos particles. And possibly ok with medicine residues and pesticides. Low price per litre.
- High-quality tap water from 23 underground water sourcesStill low in oxygen and transport through the water supply network and mixing with polluted surface water, this very high quality is unfortunately lost. Low price per litre.
- Mineral-poor osmosis-filtered tap water: oxygen-poor and mineral-poor dead water.Still oxygen-poor and now mineral-poor water. The lack of minerals makes it very bad for health especially in the long term. Moreover, asbestos and plastic particles are too small for this outdated filter technology. Ten years back seen as best solution. Now extremely dangerous to health.
- Lower-quality mineral water bottles: 15 requirementsStill low in oxygen and may contain metals and too much of specific minerals. High price per litre and time and effort to buy in supermarket.
- Higher quality Dutch spring water bottles or packs: 65 requirementsStill low on oxygen and high price per litre. Plus time and effort to buy in supermarket. Much better than all previous tap, filter and mineral water choices, though. Combined with a portable 350 Euro H2CAP Plus water ioniser an excellent first solution for adding your own oxygen to high quality Dutch spring water.
- Ionised Oxygenated Coarse Filtered Water: oxygenated but still with asbestos and plastic particles in it.Still asbestos and plastic particles in the almost healthy water. Chlorine has been removed. Perfect amount of minerals. Depreciation of equipment over 5 years and purchase of filters. Price per litre almost equal to mineral water. Health investment for the whole family.
- Ionised Oxygen-rich Mineral-rich Ultra Fine Natural Filtered Water: highest quality water.Highest quality water. No asbestos and plastic particles and chlorine also removed. Perfect amount of minerals. Depreciation of equipment over 5 years and purchase of filters. Price per litre almost equal to mineral water. Health investment for the whole family.

Oxygenated ultra-fine filtered mineral-rich drinking water
Take matters into your own hands and stop playing Russian roulette. By drinking oxygen-poor and polluted tap water, oxygen-poor spring water and oxygen-poor mineral water, you are not drinking healthy water. We live in a polluted world otherwise we would not get sick en masse. Currently, 1/3 of all Dutch people die of cancer. Cardiovascular diseases are also a big culprit. Food, air and water is what we ingest. The focus has traditionally been on food with e-numbers and air quality in cities. Unfortunately, until now, much less on water. This while we as humans consist of water for 80%. There should be much more emphasis on tap water quality should be .
