With every bottle of water, you swallow hundreds of thousands of tiny plastic particles. These are called microplastics and now nanoplastics. This is according to Columbia University scientific research published in January 2024. There is evidence of plastic particles floating in disposable mineral water bottles, but the specific average number of 240 thousand particles/litre was not mentioned in previous studies in 2019. The concrete substantiated figures are now 10 to 100 times higher compared to the results conducted earlier in 2019. The implications for our health are yet to be investigated.
Environmental pollution from plastics
It has long been known that tiny plastic particles are everywhere. Microplastics and nanoplastics have been found in clouds, in the ocean and in blood, lung tissue and placentas. We ingest them when we inhale, drink and eat. Estimates from previous studies on mineral water assumed hundreds of microplastics.
Researchers at New York-based Columbia University have examined the concentration of microplastic and nanoplastic particles in 2023. Particles ranging in size from 1 micrometre to 5 millimetres. These nano plastic particles are about a thousand times smaller than our hair diameter. They behave differently from larger pieces of plastic: our cells and organs are permeable.
Research shows that many of these plastics can be found in mineral water bottles in supermarkets. Scientists tested 3 brands of US mineral water with special lasers and they found microplastics in ten per cent. Unfortunately, they also found nanoplastics in 90 per cent.

Health risks of plastics in the human body
The health risks when ingested have not been established. Research is being urged. Animal studies have established that microplastics interfere with development and hormone balance and affect the immune system. In animal studies, they also found that the plastic particles accumulate. There is only speculation about the effects of nanoplastics on humans.
Attachment of viruses and bacteria
Very small plastic particles can act as carriers for for bacteria and viruses. They would not be able to enter the cell on their own, but as a kind of parasite on the nano plastic particles, they manage to do so. The World Health Organisation (WHO) noted in 2019 that there was not yet strong enough evidence of major risks to human health. However, the WHO believes more research is needed. Doctors are also pushing for this.
