PWN water is supplied in North Holland by PWN. The abbreviation stands for provincial water lPWN operates the water distribution network and supplies tap water through its 140,000-kilometre-long pipeline network. With PWN, you pay much less per litre than you would for a litre of spring water or mineral water in the supermarket. PWN also carries out quality control checks on 65 water quality parameters. The quality standards for drinking water are laid down by law. Dutch spring water sold in supermarkets must meet the same 65 quality standards as Dutch tap water. Mineral water, regardless of its country of origin, only needs to meet 15 quality requirements. Due to increasing environmental pollution, PWN indicated in 2024 that it was struggling with the purification of water by PFAS discharges.
In this article, we aim to raise your awareness of the various uses of water following purification. We’ll also discuss the use of a water ioniser in your home. This is still relatively unknown in the Netherlands, whilst in Asian countries and the United States, water ionisation equipment has rapidly grown in popularity. This may or may not be in combination with the alkaline diet, which focuses on the high pH value of your food. In the Netherlands, the pH level of tap water is of excellent quality.
If you mix tap water with coffee or tea, the pH value of the tea and coffee will no longer be right. A water ioniser offers a solution here, as the pH value can be adjusted accordingly. You then choose water with a pH of between 8.5 - 9.0 after which the acidic tea and coffee will bring the pH value back to 7.0-7.5, making it fine again.
The technology of a Water Ioniser explained
The water ioniser adds oxygen to the water, making the water molecules smaller. As a result, hydrating the body after exercise, for example, is much faster with ionised water. It also makes the absorption of vitamins and nutritional supplements much more effective. It also clears free radicals or acidic toxins from the blood, which automatically causes detoxification in the body. The English word detox means the same as detoxification. Alpha Water also contains a large amount of antioxidants, for which eating expensive blueberries can be limited.
As of 2018, the water ioniser contains 11 platinum plates with a titanium coating, through which an electric current is conducted. We call this process electrolysis. The plates contain, as it were, pores that allow certain substances to pass through or not. In the right-hand compartment, for example, you can see calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium and oxygen. These end up in the alkaline Alpha Water. In the left-hand compartment, on the other hand, you can see phosphate, sulphate and chlorine ending up in the acidic or waste water.
Technology has continued to develop and the number of plates has also increased significantly in recent years. This has increased the flow rate of the water, i.e. the capacity of the water ioniser.

This surface water also goes through treatment plants to meet the 65 quality requirements.
What is pwn water and how does it differ from other types of drinking water? Drinking water in North Holland is supplied by a provincial water company that distributes tap water via an extensive network of pipes. The company tests the water for 65 quality parameters, as required by law. Mineral water from the supermarket only needs to meet 15 of those criteria. Tap water is therefore subject to stricter controls than most bottled varieties.
In practice, this means that tap water provides you with a well-protected product, provided the treatment system is working properly. The latter is not a given: in 2024, it emerged that PFAS contamination was significantly hampering the treatment process. These substances are difficult to remove using standard techniques. Anyone who wants to be sure of clean drinking water would be wise to consider additional filtration or a water ioniser at home.
In the newspaper, we increasingly read about things going wrong. We frequently read in the newspaper that there was no danger to our health. Because it was within permissible limits. However, nobody knows whether those permissible limits remain the same in the long run as more research is done.
Water filter for healthy water
The 2 water filters ensure that the PWN water becomes pure, or to put it another way, at any time of the week. And at the same time retain its minerals. Many filters filter the water to death. The excuse that we get our minerals from our food and not necessarily from our drinking water is of course an argument that doesn't make sense. Both from water and our food seems obvious to me. The Alpha filters have been developed and improved for years.
It also includes an Ultra Fine filter as standard for the Benelux market. This has membranes that catch the smallest impurities. These include very small asbestos particles as well as plastic particles.

Also, only 80 out of 3,000 medicine raw materials were involved in a study on the quality of tap water in the province of South Holland. In six municipalities, there was a public health risk because the values were too high. These included antibiotics, diclofenac and a drug for epilepsy. How does this picture change once all drug commodities are included in a new study?
# 2 Water filter for chlorine from PWN water
On the websites of water companies, you can read that 20% of total water production is treated with chlorine. This means that a high percentage (60%) of surface water (1/3 of the total) is treated with chlorine. After all, source water does not need to be treated with chlorine. All the chlorine remains in the Alpha filters. Is the low concentration of chlorine in our drinking water harmful? If you don't want to take any risk at all then don't wait for future medical studies.
# 3 Water filter for pesticide residues from PWN water
Dutch tap water contains a very low concentration of pesticides which are basically carcinogenic. Water companies also warn against using pesticides to remove moss between garden tiles in summer. These chemicals help but are highly toxic. The water companies are trying to make people aware of these dangers through education. The question is : how many Dutch people are aware of this?
# 4 Filtering water to capture plastic fibres in PWN water
An alarming study into tap water was carried out worldwide in 2017. To this end, samples were tested for the presence of plastic particles in many countries, including Germany, France and the United Kingdom.
72% of the European samples contain plastic fibres.
In other countries, including the United States, the percentages were above 90% of the samples.
These particles are very small and therefore have the ability to enter our cells. One danger is that they are not biodegradable. This environmental pollution is very worrying and doctors are sounding the alarm. They are demanding rapid scientific research for the implications for our health. The particles enter the atmosphere via our clothes dryers which release plastic fibres from our clothes into the atmosphere. They then enter surface water via precipitation.
#5 Filtering water to capture asbestos particles from PWN water
The water supply network of the 10 Dutch water supply companies totals 140,000 kilometres. About 35,000 Kilometres have been made with asbestos cement pipes. As these pipelines are more than 60 years old and may increasingly leak, they need to be rehabilitated. The cost involved is an estimated 200 billion euros. Three out of 10 water supply companies have started this work. According to the RIVM, there is no danger when drinking asbestos particles.
Foreign research indicates slight increased risk of 3 types of cancer when drinking water collected from a well via an asbestos roof for long periods. A leak in a Dutch (main) water pipe can temporarily release very high concentrations of asbestos particles into tap water. We do not know the dangers of this very well. # 6 PWN Water softener not required
The pH value of PWN tap water is fine. You don't need to invest in equipment for this yourself. The pH value of Dutch tap water is already perfect. This indicates the softness of drinking water. So in the Netherlands, we don't need a water softener. In other countries around us, however, we do.
#7 Water descaler for drinking water, tea and coffee
Limescale is caused by the crystallisation of healthy and essential calcium and magnesium minerals. We see this in kettles and coffee machines. The most common limescale build-up is, of course, found in our washing machines and dishwashers. These last two are outside the scope of the Alpha Water Ioniser. The water ioniser alters the existing crystal structure of calcium and magnesium without removing these healthy elements. Furthermore, it does not add any harmful substances. The (healthy) limescale particles remain, dissolved in the alkaline water, as the original calcium and magnesium minerals.
